Burning Man Goodness: Attended a DoLab fundraiser at Smash Lab in downtown LA last weekend. If you haven’t done a DoLab party, you haven’t lived – period. Great music, amazing acrobatic entertainers, games, food, and cheap booze good vibes til 4am brought the playa experience to everyone. Also, the fabulous Cirque Bezerk has been extended until August 30th, so if you want to see some crazy cool/amazing performers without the pretentiousness of that other French cirque, check them out. This commercial on YouTube will give you a hint of their wickedly twisted humor.
Sexy Sounds: Boards of Canada’s electro-blissed-out The Campfire Headphase is our favorite pick for putting us in that bedroom frame of mind(lessness). We also love Chungking’s We Travel Fast, Andy Caldwell’s Universal Truth, and Sonanaut’s Sinking Upwards.
Product Love: Since we’ve just returned from the adult industry’s biggest trade show, ANE, there are lots of products to love for the entire next year. We were particularly taken with a new masturbation sleeve from Japanese company Tenga. Elegantly packaged, it would fit as easily in Bloomingdales as it would a higher end adult store. In fact, the big push at this year’s show seemed to be toward more upscale packaging and marketing, overall. Led over the years by Swedish manufacturer Lelo, who distinguished (and continue to do so) their vibrators and dildos by infusing gorgeous design and functionality into every aspect of their efforts, a huge number of companies have followed suit and are bringing to market unique and inspiring sexual products.
More and more companies are also becoming more comfortable framing their offerings in terms of “sexual health” over simple pleasure and titillation. This is heartening to us as we’ve always fought to disengage and distinguish OURSELVES from negative residue still left over from association with porn and sleaze. More organic ingredients are making their way into lubricants and there are even environmentally conscious sex products making their way into stores and websites.
Final Thoughts: To be truthful, we were very nervous about attending this year’s Adult Novelty Expo trade show and almost blew it off completely. Two years of fighting through financial hardship, our mother’s deteriorating health, and exhausting hours running our now closed retail store has left us a bit, for lack of a better term, down in the dumps. We had no idea what kind of reception we’d get from all the companies with whom we’d associated in the past, nor if anyone would even remember us at all, quite frankly. It was only through a friend’s travel plans going awry that we made the trek to the Universal Sheraton to help with her booth until she could find her way here from NY. However, as the first day progressed, we were not only happily surprised to see so many familiar faces greet us warmly, but surprised that the level of our own hardship was not confined to us alone. Unfortunately, most individuals and companies in our industry have been affected similarly by the economic downturn and we used this as a rallying point to bolster ourselves up and emerge with more purpose and determination than ever.
So, refreshed and recharged, we now re-embark on our mission to push sexual health further into the mainstream consciousness and proudly fight our way through the economic obstacles alongside the beautiful sex-positive community we are so honored to inhabit.
