Our Website Becomes a Place Where Couples (really can) Come.
Because
Freddy and Eddy has grown so much since launching in late 2001, it
had become untenable to continue the business from our house. The decision to sell
products directly in 2004 meant carrying inventories, which led to space
issues, not to mention the task of hiding all of it from our young
son. In October of 2004, we made the decision to find a small
space from which we could operate, which would include
fulfillment, website management, and bookkeeping.
This was no small
feat, as most of our local landlords were wary of renting to "our
kind of people," which is to say adult businesses. No matter how
hard we tried to explain we
weren't
like most adult endeavors, we were turned down time and again. One
space, only a block from Venice Beach, was particularly
heartbreaking as we were denied just as we were to sign our lease
agreement. Another space, located closer to home, ended up having
a complete psychopath as an owner and we were luckily able to walk
away before moving in. Finally, we found the space we currently
occupy, just blocks from our home and perfect for our needs.
However,
while undeniably a great space, it's a BIG space. We figured 500
square feet would suffice for a small shipping table, a desk, and
shelves on which to store merchandise. This location has over 1600
square feet, which is obviously way more than we needed, and we
toyed with the idea of renting half of it (sub-leasing) to help
cover rent and utilities. Regardless, we acquired the building and
moved in at the end of November 2004.
During December
2004,
the idea was floated to use the remaining space to create a
showroom for some of our higher-end product lines (Gear rings,
glass dildos, and Fun
Factory vibes, for example), perhaps
becoming a distributor of these items. We also wanted to remake
the rooms into comfortable places where we could work, hang out, and review toys,
as well as a safe place for our little guy to do his homework. As we transformed the interior - painting,
patching, and cleaning - we began thinking it would be a great
place for just about anyone to visit, and the notion of letting
the public have access became a reality. We would create a place,
like our website, "where couples could come" and enjoy a
no-pressure, relaxed atmosphere to learn about and shop for adult
products in an environment that
would unfold as THEY wished. There would be nothing sleazy or "in
your face," and the client could choose the level of exposure to
adult products as he or she felt comfortable. It would also be a
place suitable for small seminars on topics such as massage,
erotic dancing, expanding sexual horizons, and toy information
workshops. Finally, we wanted to be a place that wouldn't offend
our surrounding community, therefore we'd have no indications as
to what lay inside and clients would enter through a private gate
located in the back of our building.
And so, we set
about the task of designing our environment to "unfold" as you
made your way through the space. From the garden patio, you enter
our
coffee/espresso
bar (where you may enjoy a cappuccino or other libation), then
make your way into our library, filled with books of erotica,
sexual self help, and romantic literature. Separated from the
library by French doors, you may enter
the adult product showroom,
filled with quality products that we endorse and devoid of cheap
novelties and rip-off gag gifts and supplements. Videos are kept
discreetly in books that you can comfortably peruse without
embarrassment and include reviews from our website to help guide
your choices. If you wish to rent a title or check out a book from
our library, you can purchase a postage-paid return envelope and
simply drop it in the mail at your convenience when you're
finished viewing your title. We've taken every measure to reduce
your anxiety levels and allow you (and your partner, hopefully) to
relax and focus on what you actually desire. We've also created a
"possibilities room," showcasing products like the Bonk'er, Love
Swing, and mild BDSM items.
The final step in
making our concept a reality was to control the access itself. To
this end, we've made our space available during limited
hours and by appointment.
This gives you the flexibility to visit based on your level of
comfort in an adult environment, and you
can rest easy knowing you'll be avoiding
exposing
the most intimate aspects of your lives with Chester the Molester
or running into your neighbors while holding a 10" dildo! We even
offer private appointments (at no charge and with no pressure to
purchase) by request so you can enjoy visiting in
complete privacy. "But how will they make money with a business
like this?" you might ask. Simple, we might not. But, as we stated
earlier, we have to be there anyway for the website fulfillment,
so why not let some of you enjoy it with us? Obviously, we'd like
our appointment books filled to capacity, but for now we're
content to expose limited amounts of people to what we think is a
novel way to explore adult themes, toys, books, and whatnot.
In summary, we
think we've created a place that's sexy, discreet, and fun. We
hope you'll visit and become a regular guest. For more information
